One more thing, it would be useful to have a "free flight" mode along with the 1st person and level flight modes.

From what I have experienced so far (in 3d view), I can move the camera in and back with pgup and pgdn, and there are modes to keep the camera in level flight and or in 1st person. What I mean is to be able to guid the camera around using w,s or up,down to move the camera forward and back in the direction that it is pointing; and to point it as it moves using the mouse/trackball to "look" up and down, and right and left.

The arrows move the camera forward, back, and sideways parallel to the ground plane so that you move across the terrain looking down at the same angle (which is a good feature). What is also needed is to use the up-down arrows (or w & s keys) to move "in the direction the camera is pointing".

Yeah. This is typically what a mouse wheel does as well, the "in/out" rather than up/down.

I'd rather just see this be done by holding down a key while doing so. I.e. ctrl+mousewheel would move up/down and normally it goes in/out. ;)
